A solution of 13.5 parts of sodium methylate in 110 parts of methanol is added, in the course of 15 minutes at from 0° to 5° C., to a mixture of 44.5 parts of N-chloromethyl-N-methylsulfamic acid chloride in 260 parts of benzene. The reaction mixture is then stirred for 2 hours at 25° C., after which the sodium chloride which has precipitated is filtered off. After removing the solvent under reduced pressure, distillation gives 29.1 parts (67% of theory) of N-methoxymethyl-N-methylsulfamic acid chloride of boiling point 84°-87° C./12 mbar and nD25 =1.4536.
