Procedure
A mixture of 3,4-dichloro-α,α,α-trifluorotoluene (430 g., 2.0 moles), concentrated sulfuric acid (1200 ml.) and concentrated nitric acid (1200 ml., excess) was stirred at 90°-100° C. for one half hours. The mixture was then cooled and the acid phase discarded. The organic phase was washed with water, dilute sodium bicarbonate solution, potassium carbonate solution, dried, and distilled to give an approximately equal mixture (456 g., 89%) of 3,4-dichloro-α,α,α-trifluoro-5-nitrotoluene and 3,4-dichloro-α,α,α-trifluoro-6-nitrotoluene, b.p. 86° C./3 mm.
