60 ml of conc. sulfuric acid were added dropwise to a solution of 424.0 g (2 mol) of 2,4-dichloro-3-methylbenzoic acid and 1500 ml of methanol. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 5 hours, cooled, concentrated under reduced pressure and subsequently taken up in 1000 ml of methylene chloride. The organic phase was washed with water, then with 5% strength sodium bicarbonate solution and then once more with water, dried and concentrated under reduced pressure. 401.0 g of methyl 2,4-dichloro-3-methylbenzoate were obtained.
