In methanol (5 ml) was dissolved 371 mg (0.8 mmol) of 1-acetylmethyl-2-benzyloxymethyl-5-(3,5-dichlorophenylthio)-4-isopropyl-1H-imidazole (17v"), followed by addition of 38 mg (1.0 mmol) of sodium borohydride with stirring at room temperature, and the mixture was stirred for 1.5 hours. This reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, and to the residue were added water and methylene chloride to extract. The organic layer was washed with water and was dried over sodium sulfate. The solvent was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (ethyl acetate:methylene chloride=1:9), to obtain 2-benzyloxymethyl-5-(3,5-dichlorophenylthio)-1-(2-hydroxypropyl)-4-isopropyl-1H-imidazole (17v'") as oil quantitativelty.
