Procedure
A solution of cyclohexenecarbonitrile (9 mL, 80.6 mmol) and benzene (75 mL) was treated portionwise with AlCl3 (13 g, 97 mmol) then stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The mixture was poured onto ice and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed sequentially with water and brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. The residue was distilled at 125° C. (0.6 mm Hg) to provide the title compound.
