To a solution of 2-[{3-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazin-1-yl]-3-oxopropyl}(4-methoxybenzenesulfonyl)amino]-3-methylbutyric acid benzyl ester hydrochloride (1.49 grams, 2.49 mmol) in ethanol (80 mL) was added 10% palladium on activated carbon (0.11 grams). The mixture was agitated under 3 atmospheres hydrogen in a Parr shaker for 16 hours. The catalyst was removed by filtration through nylon (pore size 0.45 μm) and the solvent was evaporated leaving 2-[{3-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazin-1-yl]-3-oxo-propyl}(4-methoxybenzenesulfonyl)amino]-3-methylbutyric acid hydrochloride as a white solid (1.6 grams, 92%).
