Methyl orthoformate (4.55 ml) and amberlyst 15 (200 mg) were added to a solution of methyl 4′-formylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate (2.00 g) in methanol (20 ml). The mixture was allowed to stand at ambient temperature for 14 hours. The amberlyst was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. Excess methyl orthoformate was azeotropicaly evaporated off with toluene.
