Procedure
Using the procedure of Example 1, cyclopentadiene was reacted with maleic anhydride to provide 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride, which was then slowly added to a 10% NaOH aqueous solution. The resulting mixture was heated to about 85° C. for about 90 minutes and slowly cooled to room temperature. The resulting solution was neutralized by adding 10% sulfuric acid drop-wise. The reaction mixture was extracted using ethyl acetate. The organic phase was separated, dried over anhydrous MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated to yield 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid as a white solid.
