Procedure
To a solution of 2,4-di-t-butylphenol (Aldrich, 2.0 g, 9.7 mmol) in 2 ml of HOAc was added Br2 (0-5 ml, 9.7 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours. Solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane 1/20) to yield the desired product (2.54 g) as a white solid. 1H NMR δ 7.33 (d, J=2.3 Hz, 1H), 7.24 (d, J=2.3 Hz, 1H), 1.41 (s, 9H), 1.29 (s, 9H).
