Procedure
Methyl (vinylbenzyl) sulfide (13.59 g, 8.25×10−2 mol), benzene (45 ml), and dimethyl sulfate (8.9 ml, 9.4×10−2 mol) were combined in a 100 ml round bottomed flask equipped with a nitrogen inlet. The mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 44 hours, at which point two layers were present. Water (20 ml) was added and the top (benzene) layer was removed by pipette. The aqueous layer was extracted three times with 30 ml of diethyl ether and a vigorous stream of nitrogen was bubbled through the solution to remove residual volatile compounds. The product was used without further purification as a 35% (w/w) solution.
