A solution of ethyl-8-trimethylsilanylethynyl-2,2,4,4-tetramethylchroman-6-carboxylate (Intermediate 209, 0.525 g, 1.47 mmol) in ethanol (5 mL) was treated with 2N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (5 mL, 10 mmol) and the resulting solution was adjusted to pH ˜15 with 10% aqueous hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated in vacuo to afford the title product as a brown solid (0.316 g, 84%).
