Reaction Steps

A solution of intermediate 9-a (0.59 mol) in HCl (20% aqueous solution) (1500 ml) was stirred and refluxed for 2 hours. The mixture was cooled, alkalinized with NaOH (50% aqueous solution) and extracted twice with CH2Cl2. The combined organic layers were washed with water, dried (MgSO4), filtered, and the solvent was evaporated, yielding 110 g (100%) of 6-chloro-2,3-dimethoxybenzenamine (intermed 9-b).
