(±)-1,1-dimethylethyl trans-4-hydroxy-2-(phenylmethyl)-1-piperidinecarboxylate (25.6 g) was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (256 ml). Sodiumhydride (4.24 g) was added and the mixture was stirred at RT for 1.5 hours. 2-chloro-1-(2-ethoxyethyl)-1H-benzimidazol (24.8 g) was added and the mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 18 hours. The solvent was evaporated, the residue taken up in water and CH2Cl2 and the layers were separated. The organic layer was dried, filtered and the solvent evaporated, yielding 50 g (100%) of (±)-1,1-dimethylethyl trans-4-[[1-(2-ethoxyethyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl]oxy]-2-(phenylmethyl)-1-piperidine-carboxylate (interm 27).
