A stirred mixture of ethyl 2-[6-(2,2-dimethyl-4-oxo-4H-1,3-benzoxazin-3-yl)-pyridin-3-yl]-2-methylpropanoate (13.3 g, 36.1 mmol) in concentrated HCl (50 mL) was heated at 100° C. overnight. After cooling to ambient temperature, the reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue washed exhaustively with chloroform to give the title compound as a solid (6.90 g).
