Reaction Steps

4.50 g (12.6 mmol) of methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide are initially introduced in 50 ml of THF at 0° C., and 1.40 g (12.5 mmol) of potassium tert-butoxide dissolved in 30 ml of THF are added. After 1 h, 4.1 g (10.1 mmol) of 5-(2′,3′-difluoro-4′-propoxybiphenyl-4-yl)selenophene-2-carbaldehyde in 100 ml of THF are added, and the batch is stirred at RT for 17 h. Water and 2 N hydrochloric acid are added to the mixture, and the batch is extracted with MTBE. The combined organic phases are washed with sat. sodium chloride soln. and dried using sodium sulfate. The solution is concentrated to dryness, and the residue is purified by column chromatography (SiO2, toluene). 2-(2′,3′-Difluoro-4′-propoxy-biphenyl-4-yl)-5-vinylselenophene is obtained as an orange solid.
