5-Amino-1-(3,5-dichloropyridyl)-3-isopropyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbonitrile (56 g, 189 mmole) was taken up in concentrated H2SO4 (160 mL) and stirred at room temp for 16 hours. The reaction was then poured onto 3M aqueous NaOH (2 L) at 0° C. The resulting solid was then filtered and washed with H2O (1 L). The product was then dried under vacuum to yield the desired amide (49 g, 82% yield).
