Procedure
Concentrated H2SO4 (2 mL, 36 mmol) was added to a suspension of 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (25.9 g, 170 mmol) in EtOH (340 mL). The reaction mixture was heated at reflux for 4 hours then cooled to room temperature. The volatiles were removed in vacuo and the residue was suspended in EtOAc (300 mL). The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 (1×150 mL), brine (1×150 mL), dried (anhydrous MgSO4), and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the ester as a colorless oil (29.3 g, 96% yield).
