Procedure

To mixture of 2-Acetylamino-3-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-propionic acid methoxycarbonylmethyl ester 5 (5 grams, 16.95 mmol) Potassium carbonate (9.4 grams, 68 mmol) sodium iodide (1 gram, 6.67 mmol) Disodium Phosphate (1 gram, 70.84 mmol) in acetone (50 mL) is added Methyl chloroacetate (2.2 grams, 20.27 mmol) and is refluxed till the reaction complies by TLC. Acetone is distilled, water is added and the crude 6 can be extracted into chloroform, dried over sodium sulphate and distilled.
