A solution of 4,4′-dichlorobenzophenone (0.38 g, 1.5 mmol) was added to a solution of 3-nitrophenylhydrazine hydrochloride (0.43 g, 2.25 mmol), concentrated sulfuric acid (0.3 mL) in 10 mL of methanol at 50° C. It was stirred at 50° C. for additional 2 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated to ¼ of its original volume and diluted with 20 mL of water. The precipitates were separated by filtration and washed with 3% aqueous NaHCO3 and water. The crude product was recrystallized from ethanol to give 0.46 g (81% yield) of the desired compound as a yellow needle, mp 170-172° C. 1H NMR (300 MHz, d6-DMSO): δ7.35 [d, 2H, J=7.7 Hz, Ar—H], 7.37-7.49 [m, 5H, Ar—H], 7.58 [d, 1H, J=8.4 Hz, Ar—H], 7.64 [d, 2H, J=8.4 Hz, Ar—H], 7.69 [d, 1H, J=8.4 Hz, Ar—H], 8.02 [s, 1H, Ar—H], 9.63 [s, 1H, NH].
