(S)-Ethyl 2-(2-aminonicotinamido)-3-phenylpropanoate (5.7 g, 18.1 mmol) was dissolved into THF (125 mL) under argon. Sodium hydride (1.07 g, 60% dispersion in oil, 26.8 mmol) was added and the reaction was stirred overnight. Water (5 mL) was carefully added and the resulting white precipitate was collected. The precipitate was dissolved into ethyl acetate (200 mL), washed with water (50 mL) and brine (50 mL), dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to a yellow solid (2.1 g, 44%): ESI MS m/z 268 [C15H13N3O2+H]+.
