Bromine (189 μL, 3.7 mmol) was added to a solution of 5-methyl-2,3,5,6-tetrahydropyrido[2,3-b][1,5]diazocin-4(1H)-one (460 mg, 2.4 mmol) in 10 mL of acetic acid and stirred at room temperature for 17 h. Add 30 mL of diethyl ether and collect orange solid product via suction filtration. Redissolve the solid in DCM and wash with NaHCO3, dry the organic layer over MgSO4, and concentrate in vacuo to obtain orange solid product. Yield 670 mg (quant); 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.10 (d, J=2.0 Hz, 1H), 7.50 (d, J=2.4 Hz, 1H), 5.17 (bs, 1H), 4.49 (s, 2H), 3.59 (bm, 2H), 3.04 (t, J=6.8 Hz, 2H), 2.85 (s, 3H); ESI MS m/z 270, 272 [C10H12N3OBr+H]+
