Procedure
A solution of 2-bromomalonaldehyde (4.0 g, 30 mmol) and methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-amine (2.57 g, 26.5 mmol) in acetic acid (40 mL) was heated to 116° C. for 2.5 hours. The reaction was then stirred at room temperature for 2 days. The solution was concentrated and the residue was taken up in methanol, filtered through diatomaceous earth and concentrated. Purify by silica gel chromatography (2-5% CH2Cl2/methanol) to afford 5-bromo-3-methyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine (515 mg, 9%).
