5,6-Dimethoxy-3H-isobenzofuran-1-one (2.91 g) was dissolved in dichloromethane (150 ml) followed by cooling to −50° C. Boron tribromide (34.9 ml, 1.0M solution in dichloromethane) was added dropwise under nitrogen atmosphere. The mixture was slowly allowed to warn overnight to room temperature and continued stirring for 3 hours. The reaction was quenched with methanol followed by evaporation to dryness. The remainder was mixed with 5% aqueous Na2SO3 (20 ml) and brine (20 ml) and filtrated.
