(3-Chloro-6-hydroxy-5-methoxy-benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)-morpholin-4-yl-methanone (6.9 g) was slurried in acetic acid. A solution of bromine (3.51 g) in acetic acid (31 ml) was gradually added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature and after 15 minutes water (125 ml) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at cool for 1.5 hours. The solid was filtered and dried in vacuum. The product was a mixture of two compounds and was used for the next step without any purification.
