Procedure

A mixture of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzaldehyde (3.64 g, 20 mmol) and tetrabutylammonium tribromide (6.40 g, 20 mmol) in anhydrous dichloromethane (200 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 24 hours. The solution was washed successively with a saturated aqueous solution of NaHCO3 (150 mL), water (150 mL), a saturated aqueous solution of NaCl (150 mL), dried over MgSO4 and filtered. Removal of the solvent under reduced pressure gave a solid which was purified by column chromatography, using a Biotage 40M cartridge; eluting with 5% ethyl acetate/95% hexane to give 3-bromo-6-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzaldehyde as a white solid (3.50 g, 76%).
