Procedure

9 g of the nitro compound of Stage 1 are hydrogenated in methanol on platinum with hydrogen at standard pressure and at room temperature. On taking up the theoretical amount of hydrogen the mixture is filtered off from the catalyst and concentrated. The residue (6.8 g) is used in Stage 3 without further purification.
