A mixture of 5 g of 2,5,8,11-heptadecatetrayn-1-ol, 1.25 cm3 of phosphorus tribromide and one drop of pyridine in 15 cm3 of anhydrous ether, stirred in the absence of light, is heated under reflux for 2 hours. The solution is then poured into 100 cm3 of ice water and extracted twice with ethyl ether. The ether phases are washed initially with a solution of sodium bicarbonate and then with water, and finally dried over sodium sulphate.
