Procedure
Following the procedure as described in Example 17, making variations only as required to use ethyl 1-(bromomethyl)-4-fluorobenzene in place of 2-(bromomethyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)furan to react with ethyl 2-(4-hydroxy-2-oxopyridin-1(2H)-yl)-4-methylthiazole-5-carboxylate, the title compound was obtained as a colorless solid in 70% yield: mp 214-217° C. (ethyl acetate/hexanes); 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.70 (d, J=8.1 Hz, 1H), 7.42-7.34 (m, 2H), 7.12-7.04 (m, 2H), 6.20 (dd, J=8.1, 2.7 Hz, 1H), 6.07 (d, J=2.7 Hz, 1H), 5.01 (s, 2H), 4.32 (q, J=7.1 Hz, 2H), 2.68 (s, 3H), 1.36 (t, J=7.1 Hz, 3H); 13C NMR (75 MHz, CDCl3) δ 167.1, 164.5, 162.8, 161.2, 156.5, 155.6, 131.5, 130.4, 129.8, 119.8, 115.9, 103.9, 97.4, 70.1, 61.9, 17.3, 14.3; MS (ES+) m/z 389.2 (M+1).
