Triethylamine (0.8 ml) was added dropwise to a solution of benzenethiol (9.3 ml, 91 mmol) and maleic anhydride (8.9 g, 91 mmol) in toluene (125 ml). After stirring at room temperature for 12 hr the solvent was evaporated to leave 20 g of crude 3-phenylsulfanyl-dihydro-furan-2,5-dione as a brown oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.20-7.70 (5H, m), 4.20 (1H, dd), 3.40 (1H, dd), 2.90 (1H, dd).
