Procedure

To a stirred solution of (7S)-3-(hydroxymethyl)-6,8-dihydrospiro[cyclopenta[g]quinoline-7,3′-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin]-2′(1′H)-one from Step A (970 mg, 3.06 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (30 mL) was added thionyl chloride (2.23 mL, 30.1 mmol) and the resulting mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 2 h, then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was partitioned between saturated aqueous NaHCO3 (30 mL) and CH2Cl2 (30 mL). The layers were separated and the aqueous layer was extracted further with CH2Cl2 (2×30 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give the title. MS: m/z=336 (M+1).
