To a solution of Example 48A (0.44 g, 1.4 mmol) in methanol (4 mL) and water (4 mL) was added 5 N aqueous NaOH solution (1.4 mL, 7.1 mmol). After stirring at 60° C. for 16 hours, the reaction mixture was cooled, neutralized to pH˜7 with 3 N HCl, and concentrated to obtain crude 2-[(1S,5R,6S)-6-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-azabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-3-yl]-2-methylpropanoic acid.
