Reaction Steps
Thionyl chloride (35.00 g, 0.29 mol) was added to 4-acetyl-1-naphthalenecarboxylic acid (51.70 g, 0.24 mol) in toluene (350 mL). The mixture was warmed to 90° C. for 8.5 h. After cooling to 25° C., the solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give the title product as an off-white solid (55.1 g, 98.7% yield).
