Step-1: A mixture of 2-((benzyloxy)carbonyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (2 g, 6.42 mmol) and conc. sulfuric acid (0.45 mL) in methanol was refluxed overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated, neutralized with aq. sodium bicarbonate and extracted with DCM. The DCM layer was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated to afford 2-benzyl 3-methyl 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline-2,3(1H)-dicarboxylate. MS (ES+): m/z 348.12 [M+Na]+
