Reaction Steps
To 4-hydroxypyridin-2(1H)-one (5.55 g, 50 mmol) was added 48% aqueous hydrobromic acid (50 mL, 921 mmol) to produce a pale tan solution. Bromine (5.67 mL, 110 mmol) was added to produce an amber solution. After 3 days a yellow precipitate had formed. To the reaction was added 300 mL of water causing a thick white slurry to form which was stirred for 1 hour. The reaction was filtered and washed with 4×50 mL of water. to yield product (13.506 g, 1.81 mmol, quantitative yield) as a white powder. MS (ESI) 190 (M+1).
