Reaction Steps
A solution of thionyl chloride (SOCl2) (16.9 g, 0.14 mol) in dichloromethane (20 ml) was added dropwise to a vigorously stirred suspension of N1,N1-diethyl-N2-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethane-1,2-diaminium chloride (21 g, 0.11 mol) in dichloromethane (120 ml) which was cooled at 0° C. The ice bath was removed and the reaction mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 1 hour. The mixture was then allowed to reflux for 1 hour. After cooling, the suspension was filtered and the product was washed with dichloromethane (40 ml) to give a colorless solid. (20 g, 78%). 1H NMR (methanol-d4): δ 4.03 (t, 3JHH=6.1, 2H, CH2Cl), 3.68 (br s, 4 H, CH2NH), 3.61 (t, 3JHH=5.7, 2H, Et2NCH2), 3.38 (q, 3JHH=7.3, 4H, CH3CH2), 1.43 (t, 3JHH=7.3, 6H, CH3).
