Procedure
A solution of 4-oxo-4-phenyl-N-p-tolyl-butyramide 28 (252 mg, 0.944 mmol) in thionyl chloride (1 mL) was stirred for 16 h at room temperature. Excess thionyl chloride was removed under vacuum and the residue was purified by flash silica gel column chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate=10:1 to 4:1) to give the compound 29 (216 mg, 77%). 1H-1-NMR (CDCl3, 300 MHz) δ 2.40 (s, 3H), 6.82 (s, 1H), 7.28 (m, 2H), 7.54 (m, 4H), 7.71 (m, 1H), 7.96 (m, 2H). HRMS: calculated for C17H14NO2S (M+H)+296.0745. Found 296.0762.
