Thionyl chloride (1.30 ml, 18.2 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of (1R,3S)-3-amino cyclo pentyl carboxylic acid (2.00 g, 12.1 mmol) in MeOH (20 ml) and refluxed for 3 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and co-distilled with toluene to afford 1.9 g (87%) of (1R,3S)-methyl 3-aminocyclopentanecarboxylate as off-white solid.
