To 2-(5-nitro-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)phenol (90 mg, 0.35 mmol) in ethyl acetate/water/acetic acid 1:1:0.01 v/v/v (10 mL) was added palladium on carbon (15 mg). The reaction vessel was purged three times with nitrogen, followed by three times with hydrogen, and then left stirring under hydrogen for 2 h. The reaction vessel was finally purged three times with nitrogen, before filtration on a pad of Celite®, which was washed with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous NaHCO3. The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and evaporated. The resulting solid was purified by column chromatography eluting with ethyl acetate/hexanes 2:1 v/v to afford 60 mg (76%) of the title compound (LCMS RT=5.39 min, MH+ 226.1)
