An acetonitrile solution of ethyl 4-hydroxy-6-(trifluoromethyl)quinoline-2-carboxylate (50 g, 175 mmol) and 1-(chloromethyl)-4-methoxybenzene (33 ml, 245 mmol), is treated with Cs2CO3 (80 g, 245 mmol) and heated at 70° C. for 18 h. Salts were removed by filtration and the solvent removed under vacuum. The residue was dissolved in EtOAc and washed with water and sat NaCl. Organic layer dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated under vacuum. The resulting solid was recrystallized from EtOAc/Hex to give the title compound.
