A suspension of 3,5-diacetylaniline (0.531 g) in water (8 mL) was treated with cyanoguanidine (0.285 g) and conc. HCl (0.25 mL) and heated at reflux. After 6 hr the mixture was cooled and concentrated and 0.248 g of off-white solid was filtered out and dried to give N-(3,5-diacetylphenyl)biguanide hydrochloride (Compound 12), mp 260°-70° C. (dec).
