Reaction Steps

First, 59 g (109 mmol) of 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzyl glucose, from Sigma Chemical Company, was dissolved in 200 ml of pyridine and 22.3 g (120 mmol) of p-nitrobenzoyl chloride was added. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 72 hours, poured into 750 ml of water, and the solid was isolated by filtration and recrystallized from 95% ethanol to produce 68.8 g (91%) of 2, 3, 4, 6-tetra-O-benzyl-1-p-nitrobenzoyl glucose.
