A solution of 5-cyano-8-methyl-7-quinolinylisothiocyanate (0.85 g) in toluene (100 mL) is added dropwise to a solution of 1,2-ethylenediamine (1.94 g) in toluene (100 mL). A yellow-white precipitate is observed after the reaction stirs at room temperature for 10 minutes. The precipitate is filtered and dried in vacuo to afford N-(5-cyano-8-methyl-7-quinolinyl)-N'-2-aminoethylthiourea as a yellow-white solid.
