Procedure
A solution of sodium 2-(4-dimethylvinylphenyl)propionate (3 g) and chloro-methyl pivalate (3.9 g) in toluene (50 ml) was refluxed for 6 hours. After cooling, 50 ml of ethyl ether were added and the mixture was washed with 10% NaHCO3. The solvent was removed, and the residue dried at 60° for 3 hours in a vacuum stove to yield the title ester as an oily product (2 g). Found: C% 71.5 (Calc. 71.66); H% 8.2 (8.23).
