3.4 of sodium borohydride is added batchwise to a solution of 6 g of the ketone prepared in example (6e) in 200 ml of methanol, at -40° C., and the mixture is stirred for 1 h at -40° C. under argon. Next it is diluted with ether, washed with water until neutral, dried over magnesium sulfate and vacuum evaporated. By means of column chromatography on silcia gel using ether/hexane (8/2), first 2.6 g of the title compound (3-alpha-hydroxy) is elutriated, next, as the more polar component, 1.9 g of the corresponding isomeric 3 beta-hydroxy compound.
