2,2,2-trichloroethyl 6-[2-(thiophene-2-yl)acetamido]-2-methyl-2-bromomethylpenam-3-carboxylate (0.85 g.) was dissolved in benzene (12 cc), and thereto was added pyridine (0.24 g.). The mixture was refluxed for 2 hours, washed with water, dried and concentrated. Ether was added to the residue and the precipitate was collected by filtration to yield crystals (0.41 g.) of 2,2,2-trichloroethyl 7-[2-(thiophene-2-yl)acetamido]-3-methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate, m.p. 151°-152° C.
