Procedure

A mixture of 4.0 g of 6 and 0.4 g of sodium hydroxide in 50 ml of 50% ethanol was refluxed for 45 minutes, then concentrated to dryness. The residue was mixed with water, the mixture was acidified with hydrochloric acid and extracted with ether. The ether was evaporated from the extract and the residue was recrystallized from ether-hexane to give 8, as a white solid, m.p.: 98° C.
