A mixture of 1.238 g of the product of Step C and 6 ml of 70% aqueous formic acid was stirred at 50° C. for 15 minutes and was the vacuum filtered to remove triphenylcarbinol. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure and the residue was taken up in water with efflorescence. The mixture was vacuum filtered and the recovered product was dried to obtain 0.358 g of the syn isomer of 3-acetoxymethyl-7-[2-(2-amino-4-thiazolyl)-2-(2-azidoethoxyimino)-acetamido]-ceph-3-eme-4-carboxylic acid.
