Reaction Steps

A compound of Formula V, wherein the protecting group R4 is a trityl group, is dissolved in a reaction-inert solvent (e.g., ethyl acetate), 1.0 to 1.5 molar equivalents of p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate is added under ice-cooling, and the mixture is stirred for 1 to 5 hours to give the compound of Formula VI in the form of p-toluenesulfonic acid salt. If necessary, the p-toluene sulfonic acid salt is treated with a base to give the compound of Formula VI in the form of the free base.
