Procedure
A solution of bromine (19.2 g) in methylene chloride (10 ml) was dropwise added to a solution of 5-acetyl-2-hydroxyl-4-methylthiazol (15.7 g) in a mixture of methylene chloride (300 ml) and acetic acid (50 ml) at 40° C. to 44° C. with stirring. After being stirred at the same temperature for 30 minutes, the reaction mixture was poured into water (300 ml). The separated organic layer was washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was triturated with diisopropyl ether to give 5-(2-bromoacetyl)-2-hydroxy-4-methylthiazole (11.75 g). mp 162° C.
