10.0 g of 2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-7-hydroxy-5H-[1,3,4]thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidin-5-one was suspended in 100 ml of acetic acid, and 15 ml of fuming nitric acid was added dropwise to the suspension while maintaining the temperature at 80° C. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled and the precipitate was separated by filtration to obtain 7.1 g of 2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-7-hydroxy-6-nitro-5H-[1,3,4]thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidin-5-one as pale yellow prisms having a melting point of 245° to 246° C.
